Pulse Oximeter FAQs
What is the perfusion index for?
It indicates how strong the blood flow is at the sensor site. A very low perfusion index warns you the SpO2 reading may be unreliable — useful, because a basic oximeter will show you a confident-looking number with no such caveat.
Why does the waveform matter?
The waveform shows whether the device is picking up a clean pulse. A ragged or absent trace tells you the reading is an artefact of movement or poor placement rather than a real measurement.
Spot check or continuous mode?
Spot check for a single reading during an assessment. Continuous mode is for watching a patient over time — paired with the alarms, that is what makes it usable for monitoring rather than just measuring.
What affects accuracy?
Cold fingers, poor circulation, nail polish, artificial nails and movement all degrade the reading. Warm the hand, remove polish and keep still. Any oximeter reading is one input to a clinical assessment, not a diagnosis.
