These triage tags are built for the conditions that destroy paper. The high-density synthetic is fire, water, chemical and tear resistant, so a tag applied at a roadside, a fire ground or a chemical incident is still legible and still attached when the casualty reaches hospital. A tag that fails in transit takes the triage decision with it, and that decision then has to be made again.

Classification is done by tearing off colours rather than writing, which is the right design under pressure. The four-colour system lets a triage officer set a priority in seconds, in poor light, wearing gloves, without a pen. The universal graphic symbols mean minimal training is needed and there is no language barrier - which matters in a multi-agency response or with an international workforce.

The unique sequential barcodes are what turn a pile of casualties into a tracked list. Each tag carries duplicate barcodes so a casualty and their belongings stay linked through triage, transport and handover - the record-keeping problem that becomes acute exactly when nobody has time for record-keeping. The pre-strung 30 inch elastic means the tag goes on without anyone hunting for a fastening.
