What an Opsite Flexigrid dressing is for, and what it is not

Film dressings suit shallow wounds with little or no exudate: superficial grazes, closed surgical incisions, donor sites, and the very common job of covering an IV cannula so the site stays visible and dry. The transparency is the real advantage - the site can be checked without disturbing it, which reduces handling and infection risk. What a film will not do is absorb. On a wound producing meaningful exudate the fluid collects under the film, macerates the surrounding skin and lifts the adhesive, so a moderately or heavily exuding wound needs an absorbent dressing instead. Film dressings are also not appropriate over clinically infected wounds without direction. The grid is there so wound size can be traced and recorded consistently between dressing changes, which is how anyone can tell whether a wound is actually improving.

Common uses

IV cannula and catheter site covering, superficial wounds and grazes, post-operative incisions, and protecting fragile skin. Transport instruments and kit in a Pelican case. Use it alongside sterile gauze swabs for cleaning, or browse more dressings and gauze at MediBC.

Opsite Flexigrid FAQs

What is Opsite Flexigrid used for?

Covering shallow, low-exudate wounds and securing IV cannula sites. The transparent film lets the site be inspected without removing the dressing, and it stays waterproof while intact.

What is the grid for?

Measuring and recording wound size. Tracing the wound against the grid at each dressing change gives a consistent record of whether it is getting smaller.

Can you shower with a film dressing on?

It is waterproof while the seal is intact, so showering is generally fine. Check the edges afterwards and change it if water has tracked underneath or the adhesive has lifted.

Can it be used on a wound that is weeping?

No. Film does not absorb, so exudate pools underneath, softens the surrounding skin and lifts the dressing. An exuding wound needs an absorbent dressing instead.

How often should it be changed?

According to the wound and your clinical guidance - typically when the seal is broken, fluid has collected, the edges have lifted, or at the interval set for the cannula site.
