This is not an emergency exit sign

Stated plainly, because it matters: this non-illuminated black-on-white EXIT plate is not an emergency exit sign and does not meet NCC or AS/NZS 2293 requirements. The emergency exit signs Australian buildings must have are green with a white running-man pictogram, carry a directional arrow where the sign sits off the line of the exit, and are illuminated - either mains LED with battery backup or photoluminescent - so they remain visible for at least 90 minutes after a power failure. They are also subject to a scheduled testing regime. If you are marking a required means of egress, you need that product and an electrician, not this plate. What this sign is genuinely good for is everything else: labelling an internal door, a gate, a yard exit, a rear loading door, or wayfinding in back-of-house areas where no statutory exit signage applies.

Where to mount it

At the door or gate it identifies, at a height where it clears people and stock, and visible from the approach rather than only once you are in front of it. Check the sight line after installation - signs disappear behind propped doors, stacked pallets and new partitions more often than anyone expects. For reference, Australian workplace safety signs follow the colour conventions in AS 1319: white on green marks emergency information, white on red marks fire equipment, blue discs carry mandatory instructions and a red annulus with a diagonal slash marks a prohibition. A plain black-on-white plate like this one sits outside those hazard classes, which is consistent with it being an identification sign rather than a safety sign.

Common uses

Warehouses, workshops, factories, schools, community halls, yards and back-of-house corridors. Pair it with your other site signage - a first aid sign at the kit and an assembly point sign at the muster area - or browse the wider first aid supplies range at MediBC.

Exit Sign FAQs

Is this an emergency exit sign?

No. It is a non-illuminated black-on-white identification plate and it does not meet NCC or AS/NZS 2293 requirements. Required emergency exit signs are green, carry the white running-man pictogram and are illuminated.

What do emergency exit signs have to look like in Australia?

Green background, white running-man pictogram, a directional arrow where the sign is mounted off the line of the exit, and a light source that keeps it visible for at least 90 minutes after a power failure. AS/NZS 2293 sets this out and the National Construction Code references it.

Where can I legitimately use a plain EXIT sign?

Anywhere no statutory exit signage applies - internal doors, gates, yard exits, rear loading doors and back-of-house wayfinding. It identifies a way out; it does not discharge a building compliance obligation.

What size is it and how far away can it be read?

600 x 480mm with large block lettering, which suits a corridor or an open workshop. Rather than relying on a stated viewing distance, stand where someone actually has to make the decision and check the sign is readable from there.

Can it be mounted outdoors?

It is a rigid plastic plate suited to indoor and sheltered outdoor positions. For full exposure to sun and weather, confirm UV and outdoor suitability with us before ordering, as we do not hold a published outdoor rating for it.
