Quick answer: The SURVIVAL SMART Bandage is a snake bite bandage with a printed tension indicator: apply the bandage so the printed rectangles become squares and you know you have reached the correct tension for pressure immobilisation. 2m x 10cm, woven cotton blend, washable and reusable. Designed in Australia with snake safety experts SSSafe.

How the tension indicator works

Getting the tension right is the hardest part of applying a pressure immobilisation bandage - too loose does little, too tight cuts circulation. The SMART Bandage prints a simple pictogram along its length: as you stretch and wrap, each rectangle becomes a square at optimal tension. It keeps you calm and accurate under pressure, without guesswork.

How do you use a snake bite bandage?

Follow the pressure immobilisation technique: apply a firm bandage over the bite site, then bandage the entire limb, keep the person still, splint the limb and call 000. The SMART Bandage indicator squares confirm correct firmness as you wrap. SURVIVAL recommends carrying at least two bandages and completing proper first aid training.

This is general information, not medical advice or a substitute for first aid training. In an emergency call 000. For health guidance contact your GP or Healthdirect on 1800 022 222.

Common questions

What is the tension indicator on the SMART Bandage?

A pictogram printed along the bandage: applied at correct pressure-immobilisation tension, the printed rectangles stretch into squares, confirming optimal firmness as you wrap.

How many SMART Bandages should I carry?

At least two. A full pressure immobilisation application covers the entire limb, which can take more than one 2m bandage, particularly on an adult leg.

Can the SMART Bandage be reused?

Yes - the woven cotton blend has non-fraying edges and can be washed after use, including after training practice.

Is it only for snake bites?

No. It is designed for snake and funnel-web spider bite pressure immobilisation, and doubles as a general compression bandage for major wounds, sprains and strains in any first aid kit.
