Tension is the hardest part of pressure immobilisation, and it is where most people fail: too loose does little, too tight restricts circulation. The SMART Snake Bite Bandage prints a pictogram along its length — per the manufacturer, each rectangle becomes a square when the intended tension is reached, so the person applying it has something to look at rather than a feeling to guess at.

Treat the indicator as a visual application aid, not a guarantee. It does not certify that the bandage is correctly applied, does not remove the need for training, and can be affected by limb size, overlap and wrapping technique.
