QV Hand Cream with SPF 15 is a 50g hand cream from Ego Pharmaceuticals that nourishes, moisturises and protects hands, with SPF 15 sun damage protection. Ego describes it as fast absorbing with a non-greasy finish, and as free from fragrance, colour, lanolin and propylene glycol, so it suits sensitive skin. It is pH balanced, dermatologically tested and vegan friendly. The backs of the hands get a lot of incidental sun while driving, gardening or walking, which is where a hand cream with SPF fits into an everyday routine.

When a hand cream with SPF makes sense

Hands are washed often and exposed to the sun every day, and the backs of the hands show sun damage such as sun spots and pigmentation. A hand cream with SPF combines two jobs in one step for short, incidental exposure: moisturising skin that has been dried by frequent washing, and adding some sun protection. Ego’s directions are to massage a layer into the hands from the fingertips to the wrists, including the nails and cuticles and the backs of the hands, and to reapply after washing.

What SPF 15 is not

SPF 15 sits in the medium protection category, well below what is recommended for time in the sun. Cancer Council Australia recommends an SPF 50 or SPF 50+, broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen whenever the UV index is 3 or above, and says sunscreen should always be the last line of defence, used with clothing, a hat, shade and sunglasses. So for gardening, outdoor work, sport or a day at the beach, use a dedicated SPF 50+ sunscreen on your hands as well as your face and body, and reapply it as directed. Our guide on how to treat sunburn covers what to do if you get burnt.

QV Hand Cream with or without SPF?

If you mostly want relief for dry, washed-out hands, for example after a work shift with lots of handwashing, the plain QV Hand Cream has no sunscreen. Choose this SPF version if you want everyday incidental sun protection as well, and keep a tube in the car or bag so it is there after you wash your hands. Avoid the eyes.

Hand Cream with SPF FAQs

Is SPF 15 enough for my hands?

It adds SPF 15 protection for everyday exposure such as driving. For time outdoors when the UV index is 3 or above, Cancer Council recommends SPF 50 or 50+ broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen, along with other sun protection.

Is it greasy?

Ego describes it as fast absorbing with a non-greasy finish, leaving hands feeling soft and smooth.

Is it suitable for sensitive skin?

It is free from fragrance, colour, lanolin and propylene glycol, and Ego says it is suitable for sensitive skin. Stop using it if irritation occurs.

Is it vegan?

Yes. Ego describes it as vegan friendly, with no animal-derived ingredients.

How often should I apply it?

Apply it to the hands and reapply after washing your hands, as Ego’s directions say.

Can I use it on my face?

It is made for the hands. For the face, choose a facial product, and use a dedicated SPF 50+ sunscreen when you are outdoors.
