What age can children use it from?
12 months and over. For infants under 12 months, repellent is not the answer - use physical barriers such as pram nets, screens and clothing, and ask your pharmacist or child health nurse for advice.
How strong is it, and how long does it last?
DEET 7%, giving up to 6 hours of protection against mosquitoes, flies, sandflies, midges and biting insects. Reapply after swimming, heavy sweating or towelling off regardless of the stated duration.
Why a lower DEET concentration?
Because it is formulated for children and sensitive skin. Higher DEET concentrations mainly extend how long protection lasts rather than how well it repels, so a lower strength in a gentle aqueous base is a sensible trade for young or reactive skin.
What does the antiseptic do?
Benzyl alcohol helps protect bitten or scratched skin. That matters most with children, who scratch bites open - so the product covers both preventing bites and looking after the ones that happen.
How should I apply it to a child?
Hold the bottle upright and apply evenly to exposed skin - do it yourself rather than letting a child spray. Keep it away from the eyes, lips and any broken or irritated skin, do not apply to hands that go in mouths, and wash it off once back indoors.
Is repellent enough on its own?
No. Combine it with covering clothing at dawn and dusk, screens or nets where children sleep, and clearing standing water around the house. Seek travel health advice before visiting areas with malaria or dengue.
Always read the label and follow the directions for use. For external use on intact skin only - avoid the eyes, lips and broken or irritated skin. Not for children under 12 months. Apply for children rather than letting them apply it themselves, avoid hands that may go to the mouth, and wash off after use. Repellent is one part of preventing insect-borne disease and does not replace travel health advice, vaccination or antimalarial medication where recommended.
