How long does it protect for?
Four hours at 16% DEET. Reapply after that, and sooner if you have been swimming, sweating heavily or towelling off. For all-day or tropical protection, a higher-strength longer-duration repellent is the better choice.
Is 16% DEET strong enough?
For everyday Australian conditions, yes - it is formulated for regular use rather than extreme exposure. Higher DEET concentrations mainly extend the duration of protection rather than improving it, so 16% suits a few hours outdoors while tropical strength suits a full day in heavy mosquito country.
Why choose a roll-on over a spray?
No drift and no inhalation. A roll-on puts the product exactly where you want it, which is easier around faces and necks and on children, and avoids overspray onto food, pets and clothing. Everything in the bottle ends up on skin.
What does the antiseptic do?
It lets the same product be used after a bite as well as before one. Bites are breaks in the skin and scratched bites get infected, so an antiseptic in the formulation helps prevent that - which is why it is described as a before-and-after medication.
Can children use it?
Follow the pack directions on use with children, and apply it for them rather than letting them do it. Avoid the eyes, lips and any broken or irritated skin, and wash it off once you are back indoors. Ask your pharmacist for advice about young children.
Does repellent alone prevent mosquito-borne illness?
No single measure does. Combine it with covering clothing at dawn and dusk, screens or nets where you sleep, and clearing standing water around the house. Seek travel health advice before visiting areas with malaria or dengue.
