Authorised personnel only sign, or keep out?
The difference is about permission versus danger, and it changes who the sign is talking to. AUTHORISED PERSONNEL ONLY says the area is restricted to people with the right training, authority or equipment - a plant room, a switchroom, a chemical store, a server room. Some people may enter; most may not. KEEP OUT says nobody should be in there at all, usually because of an immediate hazard. Using "authorised personnel only" where you mean "keep out" invites people to decide for themselves whether they count as authorised, and most people quietly conclude they do. Be explicit about who qualifies if it is not obvious, and remember the sign restricts by notice only. Where the risk is serious, the lock is the control and the sign is the explanation.
Common uses
Plant and switch rooms, chemical and gas stores, workshops, server and comms rooms, laboratories, kitchens and back-of-house areas. Pair it with Danger Keep Out for true exclusion zones or Danger Live Wires for electrical rooms, or browse more fire and safety equipment at MediBC.
Authorised Personnel Only Sign FAQs
What is the difference between authorised personnel only and keep out?
Authorised personnel only restricts entry to people with the right training, authority or equipment - some may enter. Keep out means nobody should be in there, usually because of an immediate hazard.
Who counts as authorised?
Whoever your site defines. If it is not obvious from context, say so on the door or in your induction - otherwise people tend to decide for themselves, and they usually decide in their own favour.
Does the sign control access?
No. It gives notice. Where the risk is serious the lock, key control or access card is the control and the sign explains why it is there.
Why is it in the danger format?
Because the areas it typically marks - plant rooms, switchrooms, chemical stores - contain hazards serious enough to justify the danger header. For a purely administrative restriction a lower-key format may suit better.
What size is it?
380 x 280mm, landscape, which suits a standard door or gate at eye level. Check it reads from where someone decides whether to go in.
