AEROPLAST Kinesiology Tape 5cm x 5M Box/12

Kinesiology tape or rigid strapping tape?

They do opposite jobs. Elastic tape like this is designed to be worn while you move: it supports a muscle or joint without locking it. Rigid, non-elastic tape is used to help limit or guide how far a joint moves when it is applied correctly, for example when strapping an ankle before a game. If restricting movement is the goal, use rigid sports strapping tape instead. For bulk support and compression after a sprain, a heavy crepe bandage does a different job again.

What the evidence says

Aero Healthcare describes the tape as relieving pressure on injured muscles. Independent research is more cautious: a systematic review and meta-analysis of kinesiology taping for musculoskeletal injuries (Montalvo and colleagues, 2014, listed on PubMed) found it may have limited potential to reduce pain, and that the reduction may not be clinically meaningful for every condition. It is best used as part of a treatment plan from a physiotherapist or sports doctor, not as a replacement for assessment of an injury.

How to apply it

• Skin should be clean, dry and free of oils or lotion so the adhesive grips.
• Round the corners of each strip with scissors so the ends are less likely to lift.
• The direction and stretch you apply change the effect and differ by body area, so ask a physio to show you before taping yourself.
• Never apply over broken, irritated or sunburnt skin, and remove it if the skin itches, reddens or blisters.
• Remove it straight away if you feel numbness, tingling or increasing pain, or if fingers or toes turn pale, cold or blue.
• Follow the wear time and removal guidance on the pack.
