What is a compression bandage?

An elastic compression bandage is a stretchy support bandage used to apply gentle, even pressure to a limb or joint. This 10cm width suits arms, wrists, ankles and knees, and is a first aid essential for managing minor sprains, strains and swelling.

What is a compression bandage used for?

  • Supporting and compressing minor sprains and strains
  • Reducing and controlling swelling after a minor injury
  • Providing light support to weak or sore joints
  • Holding dressings, splints or cold packs in place
  • The “C” (Compression) step of the RICE method — Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation

How to apply a compression bandage

Wrap from the point furthest from the heart upward, overlapping each turn by about half the bandage width. Apply it firmly but not tightly — snug enough to support, loose enough to keep normal circulation.

Check circulation: if the skin below the bandage becomes pale, cold, numb or tingly, the bandage is too tight — loosen and re-apply. Seek medical care for a severe injury, suspected fracture, or pain and swelling that do not settle.

For sprains, pair with a cold pack, and explore our full range of bandages and sports first aid kits.

Compression Bandage FAQs

What is a compression bandage used for?

Supporting minor sprains and strains, controlling swelling, giving light joint support and holding dressings or cold packs in place. It provides the compression step of the RICE method.

How tight should a compression bandage be?

Firm but comfortable — snug enough to support without cutting off circulation. If the area below becomes numb, tingly, pale or cold, it is too tight; loosen and re-wrap.

What is the difference between a compression and a crepe bandage?

Both are stretchy support bandages. “Crepe” describes the crinkled weave, while “compression” describes the purpose — applying even pressure for support and swelling. Many first aid bandages do both jobs.

How do you bandage a sprained ankle?

Follow RICE: rest, apply a cold pack, wrap firmly from the foot up over the ankle overlapping each turn, and elevate the limb. Check circulation regularly and see a doctor if you cannot bear weight or pain is severe.
